Editing Services

Are you ready for an editor?

Congratulations! Needing an editor for a writing project is a big step toward publishing and should be celebrated. It means your story is growing up! And I am honored you would consider me as a part of that process.

Below are the services I offer and the price calculations for each one. All prices are in USD. If you are interested in a no-obligation quote, please contact me with the form at the bottom of this page. If you are not quite sure what service you should choose or if you have a question, you can also use the form below.

Thank you for considering me services once again!

Why choose me as your editor?

Not only do I have a background in writing novels and guides, but I am also a certified English teacher in the state of Arkansas. Words are a part of nearly every facet of my life. And when words and ideas are around, so is the chance for mistakes to happen. I’ve seen mistakes ranging from simple spelling errors to forgetting a character existed in a chapter. But no fear! These things can be remedied! If I can work with students to interpret the meaning of a poem, how to spell complicated words, understand the function of an adverb, etc., I can surely help you take your writing project to the next level.

Developmental Editing

When I edit your book, I will provide your with detailed feedback on any overarching issues that I find. I’ll look at elements such as plot, character development, setting, themes, etc. At the end, you will get an annotated manuscript with specific suggestions on how you can fix each issue. You will also receive an editorial report, a critique of the overall manuscript and commentary on what functions well and what needs more work.

Developmental editing is $0.010/word (roughly $10.00 per 1000 words.)

Copy Editing

With copy editing, I make the most readable version of your book possible. I make edits that improve clarity, coherency, consistency, and correctness. I examine and correct the following elements:

  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Capitalization
  • Word usage and repetition
  • Dialogue tags
  • Usage of numbers or numerals
  • POV/tense (to fix any unintentional shifts)
  • Descriptive inconsistencies (character descriptions, locations, blocking, etc.)

Copy editing is $0.005/word (roughly $5.00 per 1000 words.)

Proofreading

This is the final polish of your manuscript before you send it off to be published. It is the “double-check how the words connect” phase. During the proofreading process, my main objective is to make sure your words flow together.  I search for any spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes to make sure your manuscript is a polished as ever.

Proofreading is $0.0021/word (roughly $2.10 per 1000 words.)

How it Works

When you are ready for editing services, you can fill out the form below for a quote. I will email you back and we can discuss the specifics. I will ask for a sample from your work: 1 page for projects 10,000 words or less and 3 pages for projects over 10,000 words. (Pages should be formatted as Times New Roman or Arial and double-spaced, with 1-inch margins.) A sample from your work with help me get a feel for your manuscript and help me figure out how long the project will take. (And show you what I can do with your work!) I will then send you a projected time-frame and we will set up the specifics of the job. If you need the manuscript within a certain amount of time, please inform me.

Specifics include: what type of editing service is needed, time-frame and pricing of the job, and details about the story (character or location names that are weirdly spelled on purpose, what the story is about, when and where the story takes place, who is the audience, etc.).

After the specifics are laid out, we will settle on a payment plan. Once I am done, I will send the entire project back to you. I ask that you fill out the “How did I do?” form to help me improve.

How do payments work?

After we work out specifics, I ask for 1/3rd of the editing fee upfront. When I am half way through the project, I ask for another 1/3rd of the fee. When I am completely done, I ask for the last 1/3rd of the fee. This way, you don’t have to come up with all of the fee at once. Other payment plan options can be considered, but only before I start the project.
